How WhatsApp Business API Pricing Works in Egypt

A plain explanation of how Meta charges for WhatsApp API messages: template categories (marketing, utility, authentication), service conversations, and how to keep costs down.

One of the most common questions we get is "how much does a WhatsApp API message cost in Egypt?". The honest answer is that Meta sets the price, changes it from time to time, and it depends on the message type and the country of the number you send to. So this article gives no figures that may be outdated tomorrow. Instead it explains how the charging works, so you can read Meta's rate card correctly and plan your budget.

Two different costs

  1. Meta's message charges: paid for template messages according to their category.
  2. The platform subscription: the software you use for the inbox, team, chatbot, campaigns and reports.

Do not mix them up when comparing offers. Always ask what the subscription covers and what Meta charges separately.

The customer service window

When a customer messages you, a customer service window opens for 24 hours from their latest message. Inside it you can reply with normal messages (text, images, files) without templates. Under Meta's current policy, these free-form replies are not charged as template messages. Once the window closes, you can only reach the customer with an approved template message.

Template categories

Meta groups templates into categories, each with its own rate:

1. Marketing

Offers, discounts, new products, event invitations, abandoned-cart reminders. Usually the most expensive category, and Meta watches its quality and engagement.

2. Utility

Messages tied to something the customer requested or started: order confirmation, shipment update, appointment reminder, invoice. Under Meta's current policy, utility templates sent inside an open customer service window are not charged.

3. Authentication

One-time passcodes for sign-in or number verification.

Important: Meta reviews template content and can change its category. If your "order confirmation" template carries a discount offer, it may be classed as marketing and charged that way.

The country matters

The template rate depends on the recipient's country code. A message to an Egyptian number (+20) has one rate; a message to another country has a different one. If your customers are in several countries, your costs will vary.

Where to find the official rates

Go to the WhatsApp Business Platform pricing page on Meta's official developer site, download the rate card and look at the Egypt row. You will find the rate for each category and any volume tiers that apply. Check it regularly, because Meta updates prices and policies.

Estimating your monthly budget

Split your expected monthly messages into utility (confirmations and reminders), marketing (campaigns times recipients), authentication (one-time codes) and service replies inside the window. Multiply each category by its rate on Meta's Egypt rate card and add the platform subscription. Compare the estimate with real usage every month. Also check Meta's rules for conversations that start from "Click to WhatsApp" ads, which are treated differently and explained on the same pricing page.

How to keep costs down

  1. Use the service window: encourage customers to start the chat (a WhatsApp button on your site, the number on invoices and packaging) and reply while it is open.
  2. Reply fast: the faster your team answers, the more conversations finish inside the window without a template.
  3. Write templates in the right category: keep utility messages purely transactional.
  4. Do not message everyone: target filtered lists and only customers who opted in.
  5. Clean your lists: remove wrong and duplicate numbers and respect opt-outs.
  6. Measure: review replies and conversions per campaign and stop what does not work.
  7. Let a chatbot work inside the window: a bot or AI agent answers repeated questions so chats close quickly.
  8. Combine messages: one clear message with all the details instead of three separate ones.

Pre-campaign checklist

  • The template is approved and in the right category.
  • The list contains customers who opted in.
  • Numbers are clean and de-duplicated.
  • The team is ready to handle replies during the send.
  • You know how you will measure success.
